Unlearn..

The process of unlearning is not about forgetting all that you have learned. Unlearning plays a pivotal part in personal and intellectual growth. While most formal and traditional knowledge is focused on rote memorization and regurgitation, our emphasis is about breaking preconceived notions, biases and stereotypes, fostering a growth mindset that sparks innovation, experimentation and adaptability to change. In a rapidly changing world where knowledge, skills and gadgets become obsolete in no time, discarding concepts or views becomes imperative. One must be ready to update oneself, embracing new technology or skills in order to develop one’s personality, overcome fear and failure.

“Half of wisdom is learning what to unlearn” – Larry Niven

Relearn...

Relearning involves a process of learning something again for retention and practice, to become adept at a skill or task. Practice makes perfect. The process of relearning is also vital in terms of transformation, adapting to new challenges and handling unforeseen or crisis situations. It develops flexibility and management skills by providing opportunities to explore newer perspectives and contexts. One has to update and upskill oneself to modern changes. Relearning is to review, refresh and restructure and align with the new information, change or advancement. It enhances deeper understanding, critical thinking in order to remain relevant. If you learnt the basics well, you can tackle complex situations. From typing on a typewriter years ago, one can adapt to operating a computer or any digital device with a keyboard. Or, if you worked on a pedal sewing machine earlier, you can adapt to a quicker, more versatile automatic electric machine.

“That is what learning is. You suddenly understand something you’ve understood all your life, but in a new way.” – Doris Lessing

Learn...

Learning is not a static process. Learning by doing offers a hands-on approach to progressive learning. It is task-oriented. Effective learning can only happen by active participation and engagement, as opposed to passive learning or receiving information by reading or lectures. The entire process is more experiential and tactile, allowing the mind to reflect on what one is doing and explore newer ways of its application. Once you learn something, it expands the mind to apply that wisdom into creating something useful or sustainable. When you learn a craft, whether it is block printing or repurposing cardboard boxes, you could apply the same skill to make reams of fabric, a saree or a poster or make customized stationery, letter pads, pen holders, corporate gifts, etc. Observing birds in the outdoors helps children retain the knowledge about their appearance, calls, behavior, nesting habits better than just reading or seeing pictures in a book, inspiring conversation, art or activity.

“The whole movement of life is learning. There is never a time in which there is no learning.” – J Krishnamurti

Seek...

J Krishnamurti once said, ‘School is a place of leisure. It is only when you have leisure that you can learn.’ Ajji’s Learning Centre is a place that underlines the limitless opportunities for learning and personal growth. It is not confined to specific subjects or places. Since acquiring knowledge is a continuous process, the centre hopes to expand the students’ worldview by providing exciting learning experiences through interactions, workshops and exposure to experts from different walks of life. It is a space to create channels of opportunities to share ideas, spark curiosity, and inculcate a spirit of adventure and creativity by working together with students from mainstream schools and dialogue with guest speakers.

“Seeking knowledge is like opening doors. And I know the doors are everywhere.” – Georges St-Pierre
